AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR “COMMITTEE OF SAFETY”
FLINTLOCK MUSKET. Cal. 75. NSN. 57 1/2" Overall. Bbl. 42" rnd. w/ 2 ring transition at breech, w/ sm. stamped cartouche “SS”. This is the unique American copy of the British short land pattern muskets. Bill Ahearn in his 2005 text Muskets of the Revolution shows an identical example, w/ the initials thought to be Shubabel Sever of Framingham Massachusetts, a known Committee of Safety gunsmith. 2 Identical muskets are in the Connecticut State Museum & have remained their property since the American Revolution. Of the 2 examples sold in public auction previously, both were incomplete. This is a relatively fine example that the consignor purchased from a reenactor who was shooting it! (see accompanying notes) This musket has some very distinctive characteristics seen only by this manufacturer such as their distinctive plane ramrod pipes & thumbplate w/ central screw. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: collector notes. CONDITION: very good overall, gray iron patina, light mustard patina to brass, there is a break in trigger guard extension at screw hole. Mechanics fine, smooth clear bore. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (01-17749/JS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-8,000.
