AMES 1850 STAFF AND FIELD OFFICER SWORD FROM

MILLEDGEVILLE GEORGIA ESTATE OF GEORGIA CONFEDERATE TREASURER JOHN JONES. This sword was found in the attic of Williams/Jones/Ferguson/Lewis House known as “the Homestead”, 240 West Washington Street, Milledgeville, GA. Another sword w/ it was an officer’s sword made in Tilton, GA. According to the accompanying notarized letter, the roof burned in 1903 causing the fire damage to swords where grip burned off. This sword has heavy black residue on the hilt & pommel. The “U” originally cast in hilt was removed & based on rounded impressions, a “C” had been soldered in. Solder can still be seen where the “C” fell out during fire. Regardless, this is an interesting restored relic sword. John “Honest Jack” Jones (1814-1893) saw service in the Mexican War as Col. of the First Georgia Volunteers. He was treasurer of the state of GA for 14 years & former mayor of Milledgeville. He died from a fall from an upstairs window of the house where swords were found. He was also a Capt. in the Governors “Horse Guards” GA Militia. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of notarized letter of provenance & sm. file of research. CONDITION: good to very good overall as restored, blade has been polished & buffed, removing pitting but etched panels are still visible along w/ maker’s mark. Sword was professionally restored utilizing original shark skin grip from another Civil War sword & brass mounted iron scabbard added for display. (02-15795/JS). $1,000-2,000.
