ATLANTA MADE CONFEDERATE WOOD SCABBARD CAVALRY

SABER. Fine “as found” Hammond Marshall made saber. 33.5" slightly curved unstopped fuller blade. Unique Confederate scabbard is slabbed & pinned wood with sheet iron mounts with brass throat and brass ringer. Manufacture of wood scabbard sabers is known also by Douglass, Columbia, SC but they have other distinctive characteristics. Survival on these sabers in unmolested high condition is rare. This survivor found in North Georgia has as good a blade and scabbard as are known. Grip has lost most of its original wrap from drying and chipping, otherwise this saber would be difficult to upgrade. CONDITION: blade is gray/bright, scattered staining, leather protective washer is intact but scuffed and worn. Grip retains about 30% original leather, balance is exposed carved wood, one strand of brass wire wrap remains. Brass hilt has chocolate brown/olive patina. Scabbard body has hand worn patina, mounts retain much of their original japanning. (02-16644/JS). $5,000-7,000.
