2 BBL. SET SIDELOCK SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 Ga 2-3/4’’. S# 8241. A beautiful high quality gun by H. Mahillon of Brussels, Belgium. Research indicates Mahillion often listed as Mayon is more accurately transcribed as "Meiyeon". Manufacturer of firearm, is original descendant of Michel Meyon who had 3 girls & 3 boys; 2 of which who first worked mfg. music instruments. Charles (1 of 3 sons) youngest son Bartholemew (born 1817 and listed in 1831 as day laborer) opened his own gunsmithing business in 1840s. References state he entered his works in 2 world exhibitions: Paris in 1867 & Antwerp in 1885. At the Exhibitions he received medals, but not gold; old company records indicate he also competed in 1891 Paris Exhibition (no acknowledgement of medals). Henri Mahillon (son of Charles, born 1862) continued the business & exhibited at Antwerp in 1894. Between WW1 & WW2 Henri was well known as high quality firearms maker advertising himself as "Manufacturer to King" in his advertising. Seven pin sidelock action. Double under lug w/ third bite fastener & side clips. Bushed firing pins. Selective ejectors. Double triggers, front trigger is hinged. Exquisite game scene engraving signed by “H. Leukers”. Leukers was a Belgian master engraver who’s work was highlighted at the 1937 Paris Exposition. Right lock plate has an open scene of two pointing dogs w/ flushing quail. Left lock scene features two pointing dogs & a rooster pheasant. Floorplate has a highly detailed upland scene of a dog locked on point. Bolsters have a deep relief oak leaf carving. Remaining areas of receiver, top tang, top lever, trigger guard & forearm iron have a fine vine type foliate scroll. Breech end of bbls. have borderline engraving. Trigger guard bow has gold monogram that appears to be “CB”. Splinter forearm w/ Anson release & straight hand stock of exhibition quality European walnut. Stock & forearm have fine point pattern hand checkering w/ tear drop points behind ears. Toeline of stock has German silver nameplate. LOP: 14-1/2’’ over a solid red London style pad. DAC: 1-1/2’’. DAH: 2-1/8’’. Stock has approx. 3/8’’ cast off. Weight w/ 25-3/4’’ bbls: 6 lbs, 12.6 ozs. Bbls. have concave matted solid ribs w/ steel beads. Bottom of bbls. are marked “Toledo Steel Works Sheffield, N”. Importer or retailer markings are “JNO.HY. ANDREW & Co. LTD.”. (Bbl. No. 1) 25-3/4’’ is numbered to gun. Bore diameter: RT .719, LT .720. Choke constriction: RT .008, LT .035. Minimum wall thickness: RT .038, LT .038. (Bbl. No. 2) 28-3/8’’ & is numbered 8242. Bore diameter: RT .721, LT .721. Choke constriction: RT .035, LT .034. Minimum wall thickness: RT .033, LT .033. CONDITION: action retains sharp clear engraving having a soft gray appearance. Both sets of bbls. have over 90% original blue. Both have screws in holes for sling swivel attachment. Both sets have lengthened forcing cones. All bores are very good & bright. Refinished wood shows scattered scratches & marks. Checkering is freshened. Action is tight & on face w/ top lever sitting at center. (23-658/DS). CURIO. $5,000-8,000.
