RIFLE BY LEVI COON WITH INTERESTING FOLKY GERMAN SILVER ORNAMENTATION. Cal. 50 straight rifled. NSN. Bbl. 34" w/ under rib & mounted w/ U notch rear & German silver front sights marked "L. COON" (working in Ithaca, NY 1825-1840) "WARRANTED" on breech end. Lock w/ flat faced hammer & some scroll engraving stamped "A.W. SPIES". Walnut half stock w/ pewter cap is mounted in German silver, trigger guard having spur forming grip, heavy cast crescent buttplate has 4" return w/ pineapple finial. This treatment extends to plate at balance point, Left side of stock has inlay of lg. heraldic eagle w/ hand engraved details including claws & head. A similar eagle is inlet at butt on right side & this area on left has outline of antlered deer w/ an arrow in it's breast. A squirrel perched on a limb is above fluted cheekpiece & sideplate has fancy scrolled border. A replacement ramrod mounts through 1 iron pipe & German silver thimble. CONDITION: bbl. retaining very dark patina over pitting. Lock cleaned. Stock sound except crack on left side of trigger guard w/ old refinish. German silver inlays intact. Lock is operable showing considerable wear. Bore is good. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19692/MGM). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
