Ainsworth Inspected Colt Model 1873 U.S. Cavalry Single Action Revolver, #15491 7.5" barrel, .45 Colt cal., originally with blue and case hardened finish, walnut one-piece grip, standard blade front sight, and "U"-notched rear sight. Mfg'd 1875. Receiver is marked with two-line patent dates and "U.S." on the left, and 15491 on the bottom. Trigger guard is marked "15491/A (O.W. Ainsworth)" and the backstrap is marked "15/491" with an "A" on top; left backstrap screw will not seat properly. Cylinder is marked "5491, with "A" and "P. Barrel is marked in script "COLT'S PT. FA. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." on top, and "P/A" with "5491" on the bottom; with bullseye type ejector. Blue and color case hardened finish has gone to brown throughout, with areas of light pin prick pitting. Grip is marked "15491" in the backstrap groove, with a boxed "OWA" on the left. The grip shows age and wear, with two gouges on the bottom, a chip on the front left, and 1875 was added above the cartouche; grips on Ainsworth revolvers were not dated. Bore is very good with crisp rifling and spots of light frosting. Action locks up with four clicks, but the cylinder is a little loose. Est.: $5,000-$7,000. (Antique)
