Allin Model 1866 Breechloading Trapdoor Alteration to a Model 1861-63 Bridesburg Contract Rifle-Musket, NVSN, .50 CF cal., 32.625" round barrel, with block-blade front (serves as bayonet lug) and folding-leaf rear sights; receiver with 3" breechblock marked "1866/(eagle head)" at front hinge; beveled lockplate is marked "(spread-wing eagle)" to left of "U.S./Bridesburg" under trapdoor latch and "1864" to rear of hammer; steel fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard with sling loop at front, curved buttplate marked "US" at top screw, 2 round lock screw escutcheons, two bands (top with sling loop), nosecap retaining the slotted/grooved ramrod. Fullstock of oil-stained walnut has raised panels at either side of lock, step at lower band. Mfg'd 1866. Condition is good, the barrel being smooth brown (finish likely added), balance of the steel dark gunmetal gray (buttplate shows light erosion). Stock is sound and smooth showing use marks and shallow gouges. Action is crisp, bore is clean with occasional light oxidation and fine rifling. This rifle was altered from a standard rifle with 40" barrel and three bands during the period, to make it more salable/useful; it shows a wood patch for a middle spring between the bands, very well done. Est.: $700-$1,000. (Antique)
