American Heavy Barrel Halfstock Percussion Sporting or Target Rifle, NVSN, .36 cal., 35.25'' octagonal barrel turned round for 1-1/8'' at muzzle for bullet starter, German silver blade front and dovetailed buckhorn rear sights, marked ''C.P. Gregory'' behind the rear sight and mounted with an unusual large oval adjustable peep tang sight; flush iron lockplate and hammer are lightly floral engraved; double set triggers; brass furniture including a scrolled finger-rest triggerguard and crescent buttplate with separate lower tang; varnished walnut ''perch belly'' halfstock with raised carved aprons on either side of lock, a single barrel pin and two German silver oval escutcheons, pewter forend cap, plain hickory ramrod retained by two iron ferrules. Mfg'd. ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is very good, the steel parts being a generally smooth gunmetal gray with black powder pitting at breech and scattered aging, the percussion nipple a modern replacement, the brass having mild toning. Stock with a 2.25'' chip out at right breech area but otherwise smooth and solid retaining much original finish. Action functions as designed; bore is shiny with deep rifling. Est.: $500-$900.
