Antique U.S. Model 1842 Navy Boxlock Percussion Pistol, by Ames, NVSN, .54 cal., 6'' round barrel was mfg'd without sights, has captive stirrup-type steel ramrod at muzzle; flat lockplate is marked ''N.P. Ames/Springfield/Mass.'' below the boxlock hammer and ''USN/1845'' vertically behind; brass furniture includes loop trigger guard with squared tangs, circular buttcap, and single pinned front barrel band; one-piece oil-finished walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1845 with browned barrel and bright fittings, in only 2,000 qty. Condition is good, the barrel with cleaned pitting lacking its original markings, the balance of the steel is dark-brown with scattered light erosion and clear lockplate markings, the brass with medium age patina and battering to buttcap. Stock is solid with battering at butt, a 2.75'' wood repair held by two screws at top-right wrist, another 1.5'' wood patch at bottom behind barrel band, and scattered dings/minor losses. Action is strong and crisp; smoothbore shows overall moderate black-powder erosion. Est.: $500-$700. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
