Antique Belgian Flintlock Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .64 cal., 31.5" round-to-octagonal barrel has ring-turnings at round and octagon juncture, and two transverse raised metal ridges ahead of an oval "ELG/(star)" Liege proof at breech; rounded lockplate has line borders, a "(crown)/FR" mark and encircled "(seated dog)" logo under the integral pan, "S" shaped cock; iron large-loop trigger guard has finial tangs, brass furniture includes flat buttplate, 5.75" snake-like serpentine sideplate, nosecap and two ribbed ferrules retaining the brass-tipped hardwood ramrod. Fullstock of oil-finished walnut has raised aprons behind barrel tang and at either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. early 1800s. Condition is very good retaining no original finishes, the iron being smooth gunmetal gray with scattered oxidation, brass with age patina, clear markings. Stock is sound having occasional dings and shallow scrapes, a .5"x.5" wood loss at top tang, another .25"x1.25" sliver missing behind lock tail at right. Lock appears to be original flintlock with correct parts; touchhole may have been bushed during the period of use. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows heavy black-powder erosion at mid-section.
