Antique Belgian Single-Shot Large-Bore Percussion Belt or Coat Pistol, #855, .60 cal., 5.5'' tapered octagonal barrel with small blade front and notched rear (on engraved top tang) sights, marked with the oval ''ELG (star)'' Liege proof mark and retained by a single key; flat lock is unmarked but for floral engraving, matching hammer; floral-engraved steel furniture includes trigger guard with ornate ''tree'' front and elongated rear tangs, oval domed buttcap, winged sideplate, single ferrule retaining the button-head ramrod; varnished European walnut stock has raised oval molding at butt, raised panels each side of lock, is checkered at both sides of grip. Mfg'd ca. 1840s-60s, with metal apparently left in the white. Condition is fine showing high-quality workmanship, lightly-toned smooth bright metal, sharp markings and engraving, and what appears to be traces of Damascus barrel pattern. Stock is sound and smooth with lovely tight grain, small hairline cracks at bottom right and back of lock, top of wrist, sideplate and left muzzle, but no losses, fine checkering, pleasing color and finish. Action is strong and smooth; smoothbore is bright showing overall frosting. Est.: $400-$700. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
