Antique British Double-Barrel Large-Bore Percussion Howdah Pistol, NVSN, .58 cal./20 ga., 6" Damascus barrels are marked "Piper Guildford" on full-length top rib with gold band at breech, have platinum blowout plugs on sweeping flash-shields, Birmingham proofs, captive ramrod on central rib below; rounded iron frame has scroll engraving, matching hammers with sliding rear safeties, twin triggers, loop trigger guard, 1-pc. flat-butt checkered walnut grip with raised panels at each side behind lock, German-silver nameplates at wrist and butt, raised molding at butt with engraved silver band. Mfg'd. ca. 1830s-40s. Condition is very good retaining no original blue, good Damascus pattern, being generally smooth gunmetal gray with scattered oxidation. Edges, markings and engraving are very good. Grips show sharp checkering and a couple minor bumps, silver ring at butt molding is broken at right retaining nail. Actions are firm and crisp, nipples are mashed, nose of right hammer has been filed; smoothbores show overall light-to-moderate rust erosion. In 1851 Henry Piper sold his London gunmaking business to Richard Jeffery of shotgun fame. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)
