Antique British Enfield-Snyder 1870 Mark III "Queen Victoria" Breechloading Cavalry Carbine, #B790, .577 CF cal., 19.25" round barrel marked "Steel" and with numerous view and proof marks including "(Broad Arrow)/WD" at breech, retains standard sights; side hinged Snyder "trap-door" breechblock shows many of the same markings plus "III" at top breech and "7675" inside, has left-side knurled release button, floating firing pin; flat lockplate marked "(crown)/1870/Enfield" ahead of hammer, "(large crown)/V.R" behind; brass fittings include loop trigger guard with large iron sling ring behind, buttplate marked "R9/B/32" at top, with hinged door opening to butt trap for 2-pc. cleaning rods (not present), 2 teardrop-shaped lock screw escutcheons; oil-finished walnut P1853 carbine stock marked with vertically-opposed broad arrows over circular "R/(crown)/(?)/(broad arrow)/WD/Enfield" mark, retained by single screw-clamp band with proofmarks, has 2 screws (purpose unknown) ahead of lock. Mfg'd. 1870s as a cartridge arm, not a conversion. Condition is complete and about good retaining no original finishes, the barrel and hammer showing light-to-moderate corrosion, balance of the metal toned gunmetal gray. Stock is sound showing the effects of hard military use with scattered dings and scrapes. Edges and markings are generally sharp, trapdoor hinge is solid. Action is crisp, bore is clean showing oxidation in grooves and sharp rifling. Est.: $500-$700. (Antique)
