Antique British Brass-Barreled Flintlock Blunderbuss, with spring-loaded top bayonet, NVSN, approx. .70 cal., 14.5'' round-to-octagonal brass barrel bells to 1-5/8'' at cannon-turned muzzle (with bayonet lock at top), has cannon-turning at round-octagon juncture, engraved band and 2 ''(crown/crossed swords)'' proofmarks at breech, marked ''London'' on top flat; spring-actuated angular bayonet measures 13'', with hinge located 1.5'' behind muzzle and sliding catch on barrel tang; border-engraved lockplate with rear teat is engraved ''Ketland & Co.'', has delicately-detailed flint cock, pan and frizzen; brass furniture includes trigger guard with engraved loop, acorn front finial and long rear tang, buttplate with engraved long top tang, and two ferrules retaining the brass-tipped hardwood ramrod; varnished English walnut fullstock has carved aprons on either side of lock and a vacant circular German-silver escutcheon atop the wrist. Condition is very good. Brass parts have a light age-patina, lock parts are gunmetal gray, the bayonet is gunmetal gray with light peppering, markings are clear. Stock is sound with general marks from use and age, minor losses, and a glued repair where broken through approx. 4'' behind muzzle. Action is smooth; smoothbore looks clean. The gun appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole and original parts, and would have been a formidable weapon in a close-order confrontation. Est.: $1,500-$2,000.
