Antique British Pattern 1856 Muzzleloading Single Shot Percussion Infantry Rifle, NVSN, .64 cal., 32" round barrel with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and tall notched rear sights, marked with 3 (illegible) proof marks at left breech; flat lockplate has line border-engraving and "(large crown)" over "VR" behind the hammer; brass fittings include trigger guard with iron sling loop at front, broad flat buttplate, two winged lock screw escutcheons, nosecap; iron fittings are two friction bands (upper with sling loop), slotted and grooved ramrod. Oil-finished walnut fullstock has raised aprons at either side of lock, step at lower band. Mfg'd ca. 1850s-60s, with .577 rifled bore. Condition is very good, the bright barrel having brown oxidation, gunmetal gray lock, lightly toned brass. Stock is sound and complete showing the expected marks and scrapes of military service, a half-inch wood patch behind barrel tang, a patch of wood filler ahead, another 3" patch at right lower band, chipping along rod channel. Bore was bored smooth, possibly for later use with buck-and-ball loads. Action is strong and crisp, smoothbore shows overall light-to-moderate corrosion. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
