Antique British Short Land Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket, with Sling, NVSN, .75 cal., 42" pin-retained tapered round barrel has ring-turning and there marks including a Birmingham proof at breech; beveled lockplate is marked "(large crown)" over "VR" under the integral pan having a reproduction brass guard impressed with "(crown)/GR", "Tower" is marked in a vertical curve behind the swan-neck cock; brass furniture includes trigger guard with front finial and iron sling loop, wide buttplate with pointed heel, 6.25" serpentine sideplate, nosecap, four pipes retaining the button-tip steel ramrod; fullstock of oil-finished walnut has tapered wrist with 2.5" vacant brass nameplate, raised panels at either side of lock and top tang, step at mid-point, sling loop at 2nd pipe. Mfg'd post-1768. Condition is good, the barrel having general oxidation (cleaned pitting in area of touchhole), balance of the iron being lightly-oxidized gunmetal gray; edges are good, markings are mostly clear. Stock is sound and smooth showing relatively minor marks for its age and military use, added varnish. Lock appears to be original flintlock, the touchhole may have been refurbished at some time. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows moderate erosion. A modern buff leather sling is included. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)
