Antique Cased Allen & Thurber Double-Action Bar-Hammer Revolving Pepperbox Pistol, NVSN, .31 cal., 3.375" ribbed 6-shot round barrel group marked "Allen & Thurber Worcester" and "Patented 1837 Cast-Steel" atop 2 ribs and "2" between two nipples; floral-engraved medium-size frame has matching full nipple shield, bar hammer marked "Allen's Patent" at left side, separate loop trigger guard, integral "bag-shaped" gripstraps with what may be an illegible (perhaps dealer or agent) marking at butt, and 2-pc. varnished walnut grips having oval German-silver escutcheons at each side. Mfg'd ca. 1847-65. Condition is very good retaining approx.. 90% thinning smooth barrel brown, muted case colors to hammer, balance of the metal being gunmetal gray. Grips are sound with a few minor marks, a hand-scratched square having the initials "MB" inside, and most original varnish. Sharp edges, markings and engraving. Action is crisp, smoothbores are clean showing light rust oxidation. The bevel-top case of varnished mahogany is lined in faded red velveteen partitioned for the pistol, a two-cavity steel bullet mold, "coffin"-shaped powder flask, 5.375" wood-handled brass ramrod, and an assortment of cast lead projectiles, all in very good or better condition. Case has had nail repairs at two rear corners, a coat of varnish and later brass hinge screws; the velveteen shows age wear and light staining from contents, but is original and intact.
