Antique Cased Matched Pair of Engraved Belgian Large-Bore Percussion Dueling Pistols, with Full Set of Accoutrements, #1 and #2, .58 cal., 10" octagonal barrels with fine Damascus twist pattern are numbered "1" and "2" at engraved breeches and upper tangs, with unique circular nipple wells/flash shields, oval "ELG/(star)" Liege proof at left; serpentine lockplates marked "Lacouture a Lyon" (likely the retailer) feature highest-quality "banknote" floral engraving with matching hammers; steel furniture includes finger-spur trigger guards having long rear tangs, fluted buttcaps with raised diamond-shaped skull-crackers, single "winged" lock screw escutcheons, all engraved en suite including screw heads, 2 German-silver barrel key escutcheons; halfstocks of varnished burl walnut are relief-carved in pattern of entwined vines at front and deeply-carved flutes from upper wrists to butts. Triggers have screws at rear, perhaps to adjust pull. Mfg'd ca. 1840s with metal left "in the white." Condition to both is virtually new, with all edges, markings, engraving and wood carving sharp. Stocks have only the lightest handling marks and retain all of their original varnish, lovely grain and color. Actions are crisp; bores are bright with deep, sharp rifling. Cased in a large burl-walnut veneered case lined with green baize in the French style, with lidded compartments at opposite corners and recesses for both guns, a copper-and-brass powder flask embossed both sides with a cherub and reindeer, steel scissors-type bullet mold, burlwood-handled combination screwdriver/nipple wrench marked "H(star)D", matching rosewood ramrod, cleaning rod with brass tip, mallet, casting ladle and ring-turned barrel-like container for spare parts, patches, etc., and brass oil bottle, all in fine condition. An exquisite set. Est.: $5,000-$7,500. (Antique)
