Antique Cased Pair of English Brass-Barrel Dueling Pistols, by William Allport of Birmingham, NVSNs, .54 cal., 8.875" pinned round brass barrels made without sights, marked "London" inside a serpentine border with two Birmingham proofs and "WA" at breeches; flat locks are marked "W/Allport" below integral pans, have "swan-neck" cocks; brass furniture includes loop trigger guards, oval buttcaps, oval German-silver nameplates at wrists, serpentine sideplates, two thimbles retaining the hardwood ramrods. Fullstocks of varnished walnut have raised panels at either side of locks, "(crown)/WA" proofs behind sideplates. Mfg'd ca. 1810s-20s. Condition is fine having silvering to lock case colors, bright iron, lightly toned brass, sharp edges, markings and engraving. Stocks are sound having minor marks; one has worming above rear sideplate screw and at right side butt, the other has a secure crack with reinforcing screw running completely around wrist; both have nice finish. Actions are crisp, smoothbores show general roughness. Ramrods do not match. Large hardwood case of apparent 20th Century mfg. is lined in green baize and partitioned for the pistols, brass/copper powder flask with screw-off lid to bottom ball cavity, steel scissors-type bullet mold, two lidded compartments containing cast lead balls, open compartments for flax and patch material, all in good to very good condition.
