Antique Civil War Spencer Saddle Ring Carbine, #40851, .52 (56-56) RF cal., 22'' round barrel with dovetailed raised blade front and adjustable-leaf rear sights; receiver is marked ''Spencer Repeating/Rifle Co., Boston, Mass./Pat'd. March 6, 1860'' on top flat (''40851'' at rear) with long right-side back-action lock and sidehammer, left-side saddle ring and bar, and serpentine underlever/trigger guard that drops breech open for auto loading/extraction; two-piece oil-finished walnut stocks, the forend held by a spring-retained band, the matching buttstock with sling swivel at belly and crescent buttplate with hinged door opening to central cartridge magazine tube. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65, originally with blued barrel and case hardened receiver, hammer, band and buttplate. Condition is very good retaining a smooth deep blue/brown barrel finish, silvered case colors (light mottling to interior breechblock and hammer sides). Stocks are sound having the expected marks of military use, mainly to forend and bottom of buttstock, a .25''x1'' chip out at top-left forend at frame juncture, good grain and color. Buttplate door inoperable. Action is smooth and crisp; 6-groove bore shines with minor spots of etching and sharp rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)
