Antique Colt Burgess Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine, #1385, .44-40 CF cal., 20'' round barrel with integral block blade front and dovetailed adjustable leaf rear sights marked ''Colt's Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co., Hartford, CT. U.S.A./Pat. Jan. 7, 73, Oct. 19, 75, Apr. 1, 79, Dec. 7, 80, Dec. 13, 81, Jan. 3, 82.'' in two lines, full-length tubular under-barrel magazine, steel receiver and furniture including two barrel retaining bands, loop operating lever, hammer, trigger and buttplate, having a sliding trapdoor for cleaning rod (not present), walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd 1883-85. Originally with blued barrel, barrel bands, magazine tube, receiver and buttplate, case hardened lever and hammer, and oil-stained walnut stocks. Condition is good, the metal showing an overall gunmetal gray-brown patina with scattered roughness on barrel and magazine tube, with darkened case hardening. Stocks show scratches and dings (mostly on right side), a chip out at right rear of forend, and a later coat of varnish, but are sound and fit well. Action is tight and functions as designed, bore is clean showing light black powder etching and defined rifling. A scarce Colt longarms, as only 6,403 were made in just three years of production.
