Antique Colt Military Overrun Civilian Model 1873 Single Action Cartridge Revolver, #122204, .45 Colt CF cal., 7.5'' round barrel marked ''Colt's Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co. Hartford, CT U.S.A.'' in block font and ''P'' over ''D.F.C.'' (military inspector David F. Clark) on underside just ahead of cylinder pin, left frame with three-line 1871-72-75 patent dates, ''45 Cal'' marked on left front triggerguard bow, originally blued and case hardened finishes, steel grip straps with varnished one-piece walnut grip. All visible matching serial numbers; loading gate correctly marked ''1027''. Mfg'd. 1887; originally shipped to Montgomery Ward & Co., Chicago, on Sept. 5, 1887, in a shipment of just 6 guns. Condition is fine, with smooth metal retaining approx. 85% thinning and toning original blue to barrel, 60% deep blue to ejector rod housing, 40% blue to cylinder with deep blue in flutes, 70% original blue on front half of triggerguard, 50% blue on backstrap apron and bottom, the balance a pleasing gunmetal gray. Frame and hammer retain 50% case colors; screws retain some original fire blue with mostly unmarred slots. Grips show a few age and use marks, wear at bottom edges with chips at right side, fit well, have good color, and otherwise retain most of their original varnish. Action is quite crisp and sure, bore appears excellent. An exemplary early Single Action, accompanied by a 1972-dated Colt factory letter verifying all the above features and signed by famed Colt historian M.S. ''Marty'' Huber. This gun is also specifically mentioned on page 159 of Colt Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers by Kopec and Fenn. From the iconic Mel Guy Collection of Single Action Colt revolvers. Est.: $12,500-$15,000.
