Antique English Brown Bess-Type Flintlock Musket, NVSN, approx. 8 bore, 38.75" tapered round pinned barrel, marked with three London proofs including "(crown)/V" at breech; heavy military style lockplate is marked with a large "(crown)" under integral pan and "Tower Proof" in a vertical arch behind the "swan's neck" cock; brass furniture includes trigger guard with finial tangs (has hole at front but no sling loop), flat buttplate, nosecap, three thimbles retaining the button-tip steel ramrod. Oil-finished walnut fullstock has raised aprons at either side of lock, step behind lower thimble. Musket appears to be a composite of parts from different guns and eras. Condition is about good, the iron surfaces being cleaned to brownish-bright, the brass polished bright. Stock is sound and smooth having been sanded and the comb reduced, with a vacant hole and brass escutcheon at left opposite lock, .5"x.5" wood loss at rear of barrel tang, a hole at upper thimble for a sling loop (missing). Lock and other parts generally fit poorly in stock cavities, bore was enlarged likely for shooting buck-and-ball. Action is strong and crisp, smoothbore shows heavy black-powder corrosion. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
