Antique English Flintlock Officer's or Holster Pistol, NVSN, .38 cal., 9" octagonal barrel, dovetailed blade front sight, unmarked; beveled lockplate is marked "Bass," has stepped rear with long teat, engraved "swan neck" cock, separate pan, roller on frizzen spring; iron furniture includes engraved loop trigger guard with detailed pineapple finial and long bottom tang, engraved lock screws with round brass escutcheons, two stock keys, two thimbles retaining the horn-tipped hardwood ramrod. Fullstock of varnished walnut has raised panels at either side of lock, flat-side bag-style grips, step at rear ramrod thimble. Mfg'd ca. 1810-1830. Condition is good to very good due to the modern replacement barrel, else original with smooth gunmetal gray finish, sharp edges, markings and engraving. Sound and smooth stock has lovely proportions, scattered use marks, a 1" crack behind front lock screw, another 2.375" crack with filler angling between the top ramrod thimble and stock-barrel juncture at right, pleasing grain, color and finish.
