Antique European Large Bore Double-Barrel ''Howdah'' Style Percussion Pistol, NVSN, approx. 56 cal., 5-3/8'' round steel barrels with very thin walls (likely for shot rather than balls) and are unmarked (markings perhaps obscured by black powder pitting); fancy engraved barrel tang with integral grooved rear sight, blade front sight missing; single brass barrel retaining key; floral engraved iron lockplates appear unmarked (marks may be obscured by pitting) with pineapples engraved at rear, matching engraved double hammers, double triggers operate hammers independently. Fancy engraved triggerguard with long rear tang and lovely pineapple finial front tang, matching iron ramrod finial (ramrod missing). Carved and checkered European hardwood stock with raised carved lockplate, vacant German silver nameplate atop wrist, and large oval butt with engraved iron buttcap. Condition is very good showing no original finish, with medium pitting at barrel breech and right lockplate, and an overall aged gunmetal gray color to iron parts. Actions are working and stout; bores appear lightly rusted. Large bore pistols of this type were used for hunting and personal protection in India and Africa during the British Empire era.
