Antique European (Probably Spanish, but in the British Style) Percussion Naval Belt or Boarding Pistol, NVSN, .70 cal., 6.75'' octagonal barrel without sights has a tiny sunken cartouche reading ''YBARZABAL/(star surrounded by sunrays)'' at breech and engraved ''R.P.'' on top, has steel captive stirrup ramrod below; serpentine lockplate is unmarked, matching hammer; brass furniture includes loop trigger guard, large oval buttcap with raised skullcracker, nosecap, fluted ramrod ferrule, serpentine sideplate with 4.5'' iron belt hook; nicely grained hardwood fullstock has single barrel-retaining wedge. Mfg'd ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is good retaining no original finishes, the barrel gunmetal gray with general moderate pitting and clear markings, balance of the metal smooth gunmetal, brass with light age patina and scattered light marks. Stock is sound but for scattered light nicks/dings, an open crack extending around both sides at breech, another 1.25'' crack at left-side barrel wedge and undoubtedly spurious markings ''C.S.S. VA. NO. 2 1862'' at left wrist. Action functions (nipple a likely replacement); smoothbore is clean showing overall black powder etching. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
