Antique European Percussion Military Musketoon, Likely Altered from a Flintlock Rifle, NVSN, .58 cal., 25" round-to-octagonal barrel with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and folding-leaf rear sights (missing leaf), any markings being obscured by heavy pitting; beveled lockplate is marked "857" (partial date?) below the curved percussion bolster and military-style hammer; steel fittings include loop trigger guard with long rear tang, buttplate marked "5 E.C./O", serpentine sideplate, lower band with sling loop, 2.5" upper band having top cut-out for bayonet and integral ferrule to retain the steel ramrod with copper tulip-tip; fullstock of oil-finished hardwood having unusual speckled-like grain has left-side raised cheekpiece and sling loop at belly. Condition is good retaining no original finishes, the barrel being deep brown with use marks and heavy pitting at breech end, balance of the metal deep gunmetal gray-brown showing scattered moderate erosion (lockplate and hammer are smoother). Action functions, bore shows overall mild oxidation and fair rifling. Est.: $300-$400. (Antique)
