Antique European (Perhaps Belgian) Percussion Short Rifle, Altered from Flintlock, NVSN, .74 cal., 27.1" round barrel marked "0", "FR" and a sunken mark each side of nipple; beveled lockplate with rounded/pointed rear is marked "SB/19." ahead of large hammer with sunken "(crown)/BA" and "B" marks; steel fittings comprise trigger guard with sling swivel and sunken "(crown)/JD" mark at front, 2 finger-ridges at long rear tang, peaked buttplate marked "L", "3785/sunken (crown/shield)/1848" at top, serpentine sideplate, tulip-tip ramrod; 2 spring-retained brass bands (front of double-strap type with blade sight and sling swivel). Oil-finished hardwood fullstock has small circular "FB" stock maker's mark opposite lock, 3.75" "cupped" cheekrest and .9" roundel marked "A.P./1840" at left butt. Condition is good retaining much barrel browning that may be original, else gray-brown gunmetal having pitting at nipple area and top of buttplate, very good edges and markings. Stock is sound and generally smooth having light marks, 2" crack and bit of filler at upper band, and added varnish. Action is strong and crisp, bore shows overall light-moderate etching and very good rifling. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)
