Antique European Side-by-Side Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun, NVSN, approx. 20 ga., 33'' barrels, with brass post front and tang groove rear sights marked ''Weisgerber in St. Wendel'' (partly indistinct) ahead of breech on the full-length top rib; serpentine lockplates with matching hammers are unmarked; iron furniture including triggerguard with scrolled rear finger grip, single barrel key with two oval German-silver escutcheons, and two ferrules holding the brass-tipped hardwood ramrod; European walnut halfstock with basketweave checkering decorated with tiny nails in diamond patterns at forearm and wrist, raised cheeckpiece, and relief-carved ''beast head'' under wrist. Condition is good to very good. Barrels have a deep brown color with traces of what appears to be twist grain, and dark scattered pitting, the balance of the metal in matching condition. Stock is sound with distinct checkering and carved details, shallow dings to buttstock, and retains approx. 25% original varnish. Named after Saint Wendelin of Trier, Sankt Wendel is in Saarland, Germany, near the capital, Saarbrcken. Nipples are mashed; top ramrod ferrule is detached but present; actions function but are sticky; bores are clean with scattered erosion. Est.: $250-$450. (Antique)
