Antique French AN XII Flintlock Short Rifle, by Versailles Arsenal, NVSN, .64 cal., 25.375" swamped pin-retained octagonal barrel dated "1826" at right breech, has a "P.B.(scorpion)" mark at left; beveled lockplate with rounded tail is marked "Mre. Imple./de Versailles" in center with a horseshoe-shaped mark above, has reinforced hammer, separate brass pan; brass furniture includes triggerguard having sling-loop at long rear tang, curved buttplate marked "Le-Capitane-Pays-Sold At/De-L'Empire Italie/Almagne-Espagne-France", two winged lock screw escutcheons, three fluted and sculpted ferrules retaining the steel trumpet-head ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock has 8.75" raised cheekrest at left, .5" vacant roundel at right, raised panels either side of lock, step at lower ferrule, steel sling loop middle ferrule. Mfg'd ca. 1826. Condition is near fine retaining what appears to be traces of barrel blue showing scattered light oxidation, silvered case colors, and lightly toned brass. Edges and markings are sharp. Action is strong, bore is bright with overall light oxidation and very sharp rifling. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)
