Antique French Percussion Short Rifle, by St. Etienne Arsenal, Altered from Flintlock, #1973, .72 cal., 23.5" round barrel, marked "1973" and "17-6" at breech, "1829" at top tang, has 3.75" bayonet lug at muzzle, block-blade front and folding-leaf rear sights; beveled lockplate with rounded tail is marked "Mre. Rle/de St Etienne", has hammer with tall knurled spur; brass furniture includes trigger guard having steel rear tang, buttplate marked "3" on face, "P" and "(star)/G" proof at top, serpentine sideplate with same marks, spring-retained nosecap/top band with same marks and "SR", has sling loop, barrel-tip steel ramrod; oil-finished walnut halfstock has stamped military cartouche surrounding .5" inlet roundel marked "MP" at right, "1973" at left, sling loop at belly. Mfg'd ca. 1829, altered ca. 1860s. Condition is good having smooth brown barrel with several gunmetal-gray spots, other metal with light toning, sharp edges and markings. Stock is sound showing occasional marks, nice finish. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows overall frosting with patches of scattered heavy pitting. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
