Antique Halfstock Percussion Sporting Rifle, marked ''J.M'', NVSN, .36 cal., 38'' octagonal barrel having standard sights, marked ''J.M'' on top flat; small flat lockplate and plain hammer are unmarked; brass furniture includes scrolled finger-rest trigger guard, small patchbox opening to trap in butt for patches and spare nipples, crescent buttplate with long top and bottom tangs, small ''fish''-shaped sideplate, and three ferrules retaining the striped hardwood ramrod with brass tip; varnished and artificially-striped hardwood (likely maple) halfstock has raised aprons on either side of lock, a low comb, raised left-side cheekpiece with a small German-silver arrowhead inlay, and lead nosecap. Double set triggers. Mfg'd ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is very good. Metal surfaces retain no original finishes but show an overall gunmetal gray-brown age patina with 3.5'' of black-powder pitting at barrel breech and lockplate and hammer; cleaned brass has a smooth light age patina. Stock is sound and smooth with a repair/filler between lockplate and barrel tang, and clear rope-burned striping showing under darkened varnish (some of which is later). Ramrod is a fine modern replica. Action is smooth but does not hold cock; bore is clean showing moderate overall black-powder etching and deep rifling. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
