Antique Heavy Barrel Percussion Muzzleloading Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .44 cal., 33.5'' heavy octagonal barrel with low German silver blade front and dovetailed buckhorn rear sights marked ''G.F. Foster/Taunton/Mass.'' on top flat ahead of breech; unusual ''saw handle'' profile to steel receiver, which has loose floral engraving at sides and top; scrolled triggerguard with rear finger rest; double set triggers; oil-stained walnut forend, and buttstock with iron crescent buttplate and floral engraved fancy patchbox with hinged lid opening to trap for patches and small spare parts; plain hardwood ramrod retained by two iron under-barrel thimbles. Condition is good to very good, the barrel with a dark brown patina and the other iron parts a gunmetal gray with scattered light aging and discoloration. Buttstock is smooth with light wear and marks from use, fits short of the buttplate at the bottom, and has a 1'' crack and wood repairs at the wrist; hammer, forend and ramrod are modern replacements.
