Antique Japanese Katana Koshirae, with Papers. Nice older katana koshirae with black lacquer saya decorated with painted gold dragon in the clouds. The saya measures 31" long, the entire koshirae is 40.750" in overall length. The painted clouds seem to have been painted over applied gold plover birds and cherry blossoms. The koiguchi and kojiri are black horn covered with black lacquer. There is a purple woven sageo cord wrapped around the saya. There are no shitodome in the kurikata. The tsuba is mokko-shaped old iron with a border around the rim and stippled background, featuring a coiled dragon on the front and clouds on the back. It has kozuka and kogai hitsuanas on either side of the nakago ana. Unsigned, measuring 68mm wide x 73mm tall. The tsuka is wrapped in same' rayskin and wrapped with a dark purple/brown silk ito cord. The fuchi and kashira are made of shakudo with nanako and feature dragons with gold overlay. The menuki are very large male and female dragons done in shakudo. The koshirae comes with an old NBTHK Kicho white paper dated Showa 50 (1975). Condition is very good, the tsuka showing age and soiling to the ito wrapping, some wear to the gold overlay on the kashira and fuchi from use, and wear to the dark shakudo patina on the dragon menuki, making them appear a more copper color on the high spots. The tusba shows some rust pitting, mainly on the edge and border of the rim, with a lightly soiled surface. The seppas are a keyed design with a gold edge on copper and are in good condition. The saya shows some dings and small chips in the lacquer, with a few scattered scratches and scuffs. The painted dragon and clouds show some light wear and minor loss to the details. The sageo cord is very nice. Est.: $800-$1,200.
