Antique Japanese Shinto Katana in Shirasaya, with Papers. Gorgeous shinogi-zukuri-shaped blade with flowing masame hada grain, nie deki notare choji hamon with sunagashi, and long ashi, chu-kissaki with brushed kaen boshi and medium turn back. The nakago is suriage and machi-okuri, with two mekugi-anas, and signed "Chiku Shu ju Minamoto Nobukuni Yoshikane". Nobukuni Yoshikane was a highly rated Jo Jo saku smith working in the Kanbun Shinto era, around 1661. The blade measures 67.3cm or 26.5" in length. It has a gold wash over copper habaki with cat scratched file marks. The blade is housed in a nice wooden shirasaya resting scabbard with saya-gaki writing on the front. The blade comes with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Paper dated Heisei 19 (2007) that verifies the signature as genuine and the sword is specially worthy of preservation. Condition is excellent, the blade in a beautiful state of polish, showing a wonderful hada and hamon. There are some minor loose hada lines in the non-critical shinogi area. The nakago shows a dark brown/black patina with some heavy rust and pitting, and mostly clear signature. The habaki shows some light wear to the gold washed finish with some copper showing through. The shirasaya has some light dings and scratches. Comes with a silk brocade storage bag and cord. A beautiful sword! Est.: $4,000-$6,000.
