Antique Japanese Signed Koto Wakizashi in Shirasaya. Shinogi-zukuri-shaped wakizashi, with ko-mokume hada grain, and a nioi deki irregular gunome hamon with some choji, chu-kissaki with kaen brushed flame boshi. The nakago maybe slightly machi-okuri, with one mekugi-ana, and is signed "Bishu Osafune ju Sukesada". The blade measures 54.6cm or 21.5" in length. Housed in a deluxe shirasaya with bamboo inserts around the mekugi-ana, and wrapped banding on the top, middle, and bottom of the saya, and top and bottom of tsuka. The habaki is a brass two-piece type that has probably lost its gold foil covering. Condition is very good, the blade in a good state of polish, with some scattered spotting and light rust stains. Some of these may clean with proper care. The nakago has a dark brown/black patina with some heavy rust and rust pitting. There is some rust pitting in the middle of the signature, but most all of it is readable. There were many smiths who signed Sukesada working in the early through late 1500's. Est.: $1,000-$1,500.
