Antique Japanese Tanto Koshirae, Iron and Silver Fittings. Nice older tanto koshirae, circa mid- to late 1800s, with a same' ray skin covered tsuka, black silk ito cord wrapping, matching iron fuchi and kashira with silver inlaid designs of vines and leaves, and gold-colored menuki of a man facing backwards sitting next to a box. The menuki almost look like they have been painted with gold lacquer. The seppas have a gold wash over copper. The tsuba is iron with a raised rounded rim that has carve lines around the rim. It has groove sections to accomodate a kozuka and kogai. The saya is carved with a swirl design and covered in dark red lacquer, and has a black horn koiguchi and kurikata. There are leather lined pockets for kozuka and kogai or waribashi. The kurikata has gold-colored shitodome eyelets, that do not match. The kojiri is a matching iron piece to the fuchi and kashira, with a boar's eye piercing and silver inlaid vines and leaves. The saya measures 25cm long, and the overall length of the koshirae is 35cm. There is a small wooden tsunagi that holds the mounts together. Comes with a brocade cloth storage bag and cord. Condition is very good, the lacquer on the saya in nice condition with a few small dings, light scratches, and minor wear. The iron fittings show a light rust patina, with scattered heavier rust spots, and a nice dark patina to the silver inlays. The silk ito cord on the tsuka show some soiling and light wear. The menuki appear to be exactly the same, and as mentioned above look like they have been painted with gold lacquer. Overall a nice tanto mount. Est.: $300-$500.
