Antique Japanese Tsuba - Brass God and Pine Tree. Small oval brass tsuba, ca. 1750-1850, 57mm x 66mm, unsigned, possibly Hamano School, with motif of a god with staff, and pine tree. The god has a copper face with shakudo mustache, beard, and eyebrows, showing excellent detail to the face and eyes. The upper part of the body and head are in relief, the lower portion of his body is carved into the body of the tsuba. His staff has a small head of a dragon on the end. Above him is an incised design of a pine tree branch and pine needles. The reverse side has the pine tree trunk, branch, and pine needles. Most likely depicts a Japanese fable. There is a kozuka ana next to the nakago ana. Includes a wooden box. Condition is very good, the front side is a bit oxidized, but no significant damage to speak of; the reverse has some small lines in the seppa dai area that may be from the forging of the brass body. If mounted they would not show. Reverse side has a smoother shinier appearance to the patina of the brass. Overall a very nice piece with excellent workmanship. Est.: $350-$500.
