Antique Japanese Tsuba Brass Sukashi - Old Man and Boy. Large round brass tsuba, ca. 1750-1850, 70mm x 73mm, unsigned, with sukashi pierced motif of an old man, boy, pine tree, by a waterfall and river. The old man and boy have silver inlaid faces, with gold inlaid highlights of their clothing, backpack, and fan. The pine tree needles and water fall have gold inlaid dots to highlight their details. Wonderful detail to the figures, ground, pine tree trunk, branches, and needles. There is a kogai shaped ana next to the nakago ana. The nakago ana has a sekigane added, showing the tsuba was remounted, probably several times on different swords. Comes with a wooden box and appraisal sheet from a Japanese sword dealer dated 2016. Condition is very good, the surface shows numerous scratches from age and use, and numerous lines from the forging of the brass plate. There is light wear to the high edges of the figures, mainly the corner of the boy's backpack. There are some heavy scratches in the seppa dai area on the front side. The kogai-shaped ana may have been a later period addition (which is very common), as there seems to be design elements on the back side that were located where the hole is now. The surface has a dark mottled smooth appearance that has not been cleaned. Est.: $350-$500.
