Antique Japanese Tsuba - Dark Copper/Gold Hawk, Signed. Circa Edo period, early 19th Century. Beautiful dark copper round tsuba with finely worked surface featuring a large gold hawk on a tree branch, overlooking a waterfall and waves. Tsuba measures 70 mm wide x 75mm tall, so suitable for katana or wakizashi. The workmanship is very good, the surface of the tsuba being heavily textured with wrinkled type pattern, nicely carved details to the waves and waterfall. The hawk is in high relief, covered with gold, and has finely carved feathers and features. The signature reads "Naoshige w/kao". There is a three lobe-shaped hitsuana, for a kozuka next to the nakago ana; the reverse features the same wrinkled surface with a carved tree, roots, and branches with needles. Condition is excellent, the body of the tsuba with a wonderful dark brown copper patina showing little age or wear. There are some light dings around the smooth rim edge and minor wear to the gold covering on the hawk. In wood storage box and felt bag, with a Japanese sword dealer fact sheet dated 2016. Also included in the box is an iron kurikata decorated with gold-covered Chinese writing characters and a copper fly whisk. There are gold-colored metal shitodome on either side. Est.: $400-$600.
