Antique Japanese Wakizashi O-Kissaki, with Paper. A nice shinogi-zukuri-shaped wakizashi, from the early Shinto period, o-suriage mumei (shortened and unsigned), with three mekugi-anas, one filled with lead. Mokume hada grain, nioi-deki gunome midare hamon with ko-nie, sunagashi, and kinsuji, magnificent large O-kissaki, pointed kaeri boshi with long turn back. Two narrow futa-suji hi grooves on both sides in the shinogi area. Blade measures 37.3cm or 14-5/8" in length. Gold foil over copper habaki with diagonal cat scratch file marks. Mounted in a wooden shirasaya resting scabbard. Includes an NBTHK paper dated Heisei 27 (2015) that attributes the sword to "Ujifusa". There were several generations of smiths that signed Ujifusa from the late Koto period thru late Shinto period, working in the Mino, Owari, and Satsuma areas. This sword with its O-kissaki could date from the Keicho era, early Shinto period, around 1600. Condition is excellent, the sword in a nice state of polish, clear tightly forged hada, prominent hamon, and nice horimono grooves. The nakago has a nice dark brown patina with light rust on the surface. The habaki has several dings and scrapes to the surface. The shirasaya has a few dings and depressions, light stains from handling, and some insect nibbles to the horn inserts that surround the mekugiana. A very sexy blade with that large O-kissaki. Est.: $800-$1,600.
