Original Japanese Wakizashi short sword, one of the traditionally made Japanese swords worn by the samurai in feudal Japan.17' Shinogi-Zukuri (Ridge-line style) Folded steel blade (fold lines are evident on the spine and body of the blade), unsigned tang (kogatana is signed) with centuries of dark oxidation, the one hole is punched, not drilled. traditional, hand-forged piece most likely from the Late Muromachi or the Edo Period (roughly between 1500 and 1850). more likely late Muromachi Period (c. 1500 – 1573) with the slender blade with deeper curve (Sori). Early Edo period swords had straighter blades.17' blades were a very common length for early companion swords worn during civil war times. Blade collar ("habaki") is laminated brass. Handle (Tsuka) made of wood wrapped in ray skin, wrapped in black fabric. On the handle, under the fabric, you can see (menuki) copper alloy depicting dragons. The “kashira” end cap and "Fuchi collar are decorated with bamboo leaves and shishi's (guardian lion-dogs) is a mythical protector symbolizing strength, courage, and the warding off of evil. The one hole in the unsigned tang is punched, not drilled, round (Maru Gata) shaped iron tsuba with two spacers is inlaid in gilt with village scene. Brown lacquered saya (wooden scabbard) with kurigata sageo cord loop mount intact with copper end fitting to saya. Inlet slot is designed to hold a small utility knife known as a kogatana, The kogatana's blade has a 3 mei signature and the menuki appears to be intertwined serpents. (hard to make out). The blade has some patches of surface rust. The sageo cord is of newer manufacture. Overall very good for it's age, the blade displays scattered patina and some dark spots, may improve with polishing. Comes in a newer red/gray storage bag with tassels.
