Antique Japanese Wakizashi in Old Shirasaya. Nice mumei (unsigned) shinogi-zukuri-shaped wakizashi, o-suriage nakago tang with three mekugi-anas (holes), muji mokume hada grain to the steel, with a nioi deki gunome choji hamon, chu-kissaki with o-maru midare boshi having a small turn back. Large bohi groove runs from past the yokote line through the bottom of the tang. The blade is housed in an old shirasaya with saya-gaki attribution written in black ink, and dated Showa 25 (1950). Includes an NBTHK Hozon paper dated Heisei 23 (2011) attributing the sword to "Sue Bizen", (made in Bizen Province around 1500-1590). The blade measures 53.5cm(23-1/16"). Condition is excellent, the blade having a nice old polish that highlights the hamon over the hada. The hamon is very nice with lots of activity. There are a few light scratches, mostly near the bottom of the blade, and some light rust stains in the same area. The nakago has a dark brown/black patina. The saya has numerous dings and scratches, with a small chip at the mouth, starting to split near the bottom, but still fairly tight. The handle has ivory eyelets. There is a small paper glued to the bottom part of the saya with kanji written on it. This could be a collector's note or other information. The habaki is wood and is missing a piece on the mune or top edge part. Overall a nice Bizen sword, with lots of features worthy of study. Est.: $2,500-$3,500.
