Antique Japanese Wakizashi in Shirasaya, Signed & Dated. Very nice beefy, stout, shinogi-zukuri wakizashi with an O-kissaki large point. Beautiful prominent itame hada grain to the steel, small sugha based irregular gunome hamon of nioi and nie, with a brushed kaen flame-type boshi, with small turn back. Blade length is 48.4cm(19-1/16"). The nakago is ubu with one mekugi-ana hole, and signed "Matsumura Masa Nao", and dated Bunka 2 (1805). Masanao was a student of the Masahide School during Shin-Shinto times. While the workmanship in the blade is very good, there is no certificate to verify the signature and date. It has a nice silver foil over copper habaki with cat scratched file marks. Mounted in a nice shirasaya wooden resting scabbard, with ivory eyelets. Condition is excellent, the blade in a very nice state of polish, showing a clear hada grain and hamon. There are a few minor spots of very light rust staining on the back spine (shinogi) and around the ha on one side of the kissaki and near the ha machi, just above the habaki. With proper cleaning this should mostly disappear. Overall an impressive looking wakizashi. Est.: $1,500-$2,500.
