Antique Japanese Wakizashi in Shirasaya, with Paper. A shinogi-zukuri-shaped wakizashi, o-suriage mumei (shortened and unsigned), machi-okuri, with three mekugi-anas in the nakago. Itame and mokume hada, nie-deki and nioi notare hamon, chu-kissaki with o-maru boshi and short turn back. Blade length is 44.7cm or 17-9/16". Copper habaki. Mounted in a shirasaya wood resting scabbard. Includes an NBTHK paper dated Heisei 16 (2004) that attributes the sword to "Shimosaka" school, who were located in Echizen province during the late Koto into Shinto time periods, and followed the Mino tradition of sword making. Condition is very good, the sword in a good state of polish showing visible hada and a nice hamon. There is some loose hada and a small kizu or two, with areas of pinprick rust spots that were not taken out when polished, to preserve as much of the shape as possible. The nakago has been lightly cleaned with scratch marks visible and minor pitting. The habaki has a few small dings and scratches. There are a few light stains from old oil, that should clean with proper care. The shirasaya is very nice. Est.: $300-$500.
