Antique Large-Bore Underhammer Single-Shot Saw-Handle Percussion Pistol, unmarked but by Blunt & Syms of New York, NVSN, approx. .48 cal., 4.75'' round-to-octagonal barrel, post front sight, knurled cannon turnings at muzzle and round-octagon juncture; undecorated saw-handle iron frame has a raised-notch rear sight on the long, flat sighting plane, hammer and trigger located beneath, and integral grip straps; two-piece varnished walnut grips have a raised molding at oval butt. Mfg'd ca. 1840s-50s. Condition is very good+. Barrel retains traces of original blue on the flats, otherwise the metal is smooth gunmetal gray with sharp edges and light black powder pitting in area of the percussion nipple. Grips are sound and smooth with nice grain, small chips at right toe and heel, and a later coat of varnish. Action is tight and smooth; bore is clean with etching toward muzzle and deep rifling.
