Antique Marlin Model 1881 3rd Type Lever Action Rifle, #5656, .40-60 CF cal., 28'' octagonal barrel with vacant dovetails for front and rear sights marked on top flat ''Marlin Fire-Arms Co., New-Haven, CT. U.S.A.'' flanked by fletched arrows, over eight patent dates followed by ''Reissue Nov. 9, 1880'' in two lines; full-length tubular under-barrel magazine, steel receiver and furniture including nosecap, operating lever, hammer, double-set triggers (a rarity), and buttplate; varnished walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd 1881-92. Originally with blued barrel and magazine tube, case hardened lever, hammer and buttplate. Condition is very good, the barrel and magazine tube retaining approx. 25% original blue mixing with age patina but no pitting, the receiver a brown patina, with silvered/darkened case hardened parts (some roughness to buttplate). Stocks show minor dings from use but are smooth, solid, fit well and have nice grain and color. Barrel sights are missing. Set triggers do not function properly, and hammer does not hold when lever is cocked (trigger mechanism likely needs attention); bore is shiny and clean with defined rifling. Est.: $1,000-$1,500.
