Antique Marlin Model 1889 Lever Action Rifle, #58973, .38-40 CF cal., 23'' octagonal barrel with buckhorn sights, marked with maker's name, address and 1887-89 patent dates in two lines ahead of rear sight, and ''.38-W.'' behind; full-length under-barrel magazine tube; solid frame with right-side cartridge ejection marked on top ''Marlin Safety'' flanked by feather-like finials, and ''58973'' at bottom front; loop operating lever with rear catch; varnished walnut stocks have a steel nosecap and crescent buttplate. Mfg'd 1891. Condition is good to very good. Metal surfaces show an overall smooth brown patina with sharp edges and clear markings. Stocks are solid with wood repairs where once broken at wrist, including five reinforcing dowels extending from side-to-side, and a later oil-stain finish. Action is smooth; bore is overall frosted but with deep rifling. Scarce, as only approx. 55,000 made, and especially with this 23'' barrel length, which appears factory original. Est.: $500-$750.
