Antique Marlin Model 1889 Lever Action Saddlering Carbine, #46662, .44-40 CF cal., 20'' round barrel with buckhorn sights, marked with maker's name, address and 1887-89 patent dates in two lines ahead of rear sight, and ''44 W.'' behind; full-length under-barrel magazine tube is retained by a single band at muzzle; solid frame with left-side saddle stud and ring and right-side cartridge ejection, marked on top ''Marlin Safety'' flanked by feather-like finials, and ''46662'' at bottom front; loop operating lever with rear catch; varnished walnut forend with a single barrel band, and matching buttstock with carbine buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1891. Condition is good to very good. Metal surfaces show an overall smooth gunmetal gray with sharp edges and clear markings, and a bit of knackering at top right of receiver. Stocks are smooth and solid, the forend with a later coat of varnish, the buttstock with wood repairs where once broken at wrist and a later light oil-stained finish. Action is smooth; bore is overall frosted with defined rifling. The Model 1889 carbine is scarce, with only 8,354 made, and especially so in this .44-40 caliber. Est.: $700-$1,200. (Antique)*
