Antique U.S. Model 1842 Single Shot Percussion Pistol, by Henry Aston of Middletown, CT, NVSN, .54 cal., 8.5'' round barrel with blade front and no rear sights, lacks the ''U.S.'' and date markings on barrel breech and tang, but ''NWP'' initials of military inspector Nahum W. Patch are sharp; beveled lockplate is marked ''US/H. Aston'' under nipple bolster, and ''Midltn/Conn/1848'' in 3 vertical lines behind hammer; brass furniture includes two-piece trigger guard with rear tang extending to buttcap having a long backstrap extending to the top barrel tang, curved sideplate made integral with the single barrel band; one-piece oil-stained walnut halfstock has raised panels at either side of lock, oval military inspector's initials cartouche on left side, and captive stirrup-type button-head steel ramrod. Numerous small ''H'' inspectors' marks appear on the brass sideplate, backstrap and front trigger guard tang; a tiny anchor (?) and ''H'' are marked at left barrel breech. Mfg'd ca. 1845-52, originally finished ''bright'' but for a blued trigger. Condition is very good+, the barrel and tang show a dull gunmetal color with scattered cleaned erosion, dark gunmetal lockplate and hammer, and lightly toned cleaned brass. Stock is smooth and sound with a good inspector's mark, nice grain and coloration. Action is very strong; smoothbore is clean showing moderate black-powder erosion. Est.: $750-$1,000.
